Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery
The field of Urogynecology (a subspecialty within Obstetrics and Gynecology) is dedicated to the treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders such as urinary or fecal incontinence and prolapse (bulging) of the vagina, bladder and/or the uterus. After completing residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urogynecologists undergo fellowship training where they spend several years focusing only on these disorders.
The formal name for Urogynecology is Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery (aka FPMRS)
In 2011, American Board of Medical Subspecialties voted to formally recognize Urogynecology as an official subspecialty of Obstetrics & Gynecology using the formal name FPMRS.
All physicians like Dr. Scheinberg vaginal rejuvenation surgeon who wish to be Board Certified in FPMRS must have completed a Fellowship in FPMRS and must pass a series of Board Exams.
Having passed the first ever Board exam offered, Doctor Culligan was one of the first Board Certified FPMRS doctors in the country.
